Is your terrace ready for BBQ weather?
Terrace cleaning is not always top of the ‘To Do’ list but they can become dirty, especially over the winter months. Add some moist mild weather to the mix and you have an ideal condition for algae and moss to grow.
Surfaces
Depending on the surface of your terrace, this can be easy or less easy to remove. Hard shiny surfaces are the easiest to clean, often warm water with a detergent or diluted vinegar and a soft brush will suffice. If the surface is slightly porous and textured then more aggressive action required.
Pressure washing is a simple way to clean most terrace surfaces. If the material is natural, ie.cut stone then be careful which cleaning products you choose. You don’t want to destroy the surface integrity of your terrace. Therefore important to use pressure washing equipment with variable/soft pressure options.
Lichen
If your terrace is blighted by lichen, in the form of black spots then a biocide treatment can be used. This also helps to prevent the return of lichen/algae in the short term. The use of chemicals should be within the context of environmental impact.
Chemicals
We too often see the liberal spraying of chemicals on to surfaces with little or no regard to safety, ecological, and environmental considerations. As with many chemical control products, there is not a clear right or wrong. It is using what is available in a measured, controlled methodology.
Any chemical control has a negative impact, but also has positives. It’s a question of balance.
