Tennis Court Cleaning and Maintenance

Bring your tennis courts back to ‘competition’ standard.

Regular tennis court cleaning and drainage checks, are essential to stop moss and debris compromising your hard tennis court. The moss will quickly spread over the court, making it a dangerous surface for playing.

To help prevent this occurring, you can take several actions:

Trees and Shrubs

Ensure the courts are kept free of leaves and debris. If you have trees and shrubs adjacent to the courts, maintenance needs to be on a regular basis, especially during the autumn. A leaf blower or soft broom is ideal for this task. Airborne dust, especially near arable land adds to the potential for moss growth.

Moss and Silt

Moss and silt build up on the surface, with all the potential problems that can bring, player safety being paramount.

First signs of moss on a previously clean looking tennis court

The above image shows the first signs of moss on a previously clean looking tennis court, which appeared within 4 weeks from September to October. The natural air-born debris has now become an ideal moss developing environment. This growth will soon impede the natural drainage of the court thus accelerating vegetation growth. This will require cleaning before the next tennis season.

Drainage

Good drainage in the court area is also very important. Heavy storms can cause a quick build-up of silty water, which is flowing on to the court, will leave that silt behind. This blocks court drainage and acts as a medium for moss growth.

Therefore, it is advisable to clean your tennis court every 2 or 3 years, depending on the environment and positioning of the courts.
